£2m NIHR grant for smoking cessation research
The UKCTCS has been awarded nearly £2 million by the National Institute for Health Research to conduct three projects that will develop innovative ways of helping people stop smoking in hospitals, the community and in the home.
The programme will comprise of three projects:
a) To evaluate the effectiveness of a systematic smoking cessation service, provided by Stop Smoking Service practitioners with delegated prescribing rights, designed to ensure that all smokers admitted to hospital are offered effective behavioural support and appropriate pharmacotherapy, before and after discharge, to help them stop smoking.
b) To develop and assess the impact of a mobile, community-based cessation service as a means of bringing Stop Smoking Services to smokers living in disadvantaged areas.
c) To develop and test the use of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) as a means to support smokers in abstaining from smoking inside the home, and hence reduce passive exposure of children.
Work, to commence in early 2010 will take place in Nottingham and will be led by Professor Britton.
